Ronit Elimelech, of blessed memory, with her children

The Rescue Teams Found Them in a Corner, Still Holding Hands

On the morning of March 1, 2026, as Iranian ballistic missiles streaked toward central Israel, Ronit Elimelech did what she always did when sirens sounded: she made sure everyone else got out first.

Ronit had brought her three children to visit their grandparents in Beit Shemesh for the weekend. When the alert came, she led them into the public shelter beneath the neighborhood synagogue. Then she turned back. Her elderly mother needed help walking.

The missile struck before they could make it out.

For agonizing hours, rescue teams sifted through the rubble, searching for the missing. When they finally found Ronit and her mother Sara, the two were in a corner of the collapsed shelter, holding hands. They had not let go of each other.

Her brother Momi said it simply: “In life and in death, they didn’t part.”

Nissim Elimelech is now raising three traumatized children alone. Help the family today.

Ronit, 44, had joined United Hatzalah two years earlier. She completed her EMT certification and began responding to emergencies across Beit Shemesh and the surrounding neighborhoods. She was also active in Hatzalah’s Ten Kavod initiative, assisting elderly residents with warmth and patience. When her neighbors called for help, Ronit was often among the first to arrive, medical kit in hand.

She had joined the organization because of her son Itamar. He was 11 years old when he asked her to volunteer as his birthday gift. Hatzalah President Eli Beer, who met them personally, wrote after her death: “Itamar was so proud of his mother.”

Two of Ronit’s three children were pulled from the rubble and taken to Hadassah Ein Kerem Medical Center. A third was found unharmed. Her husband Nissim was not there when the missile hit. He learned what had happened the way so many husbands learned things that day: from a phone call that changed everything.

The God of Israel has always delivered His promises through people.

Isaiah recorded the words: “Do not fear, for I am with you. I will strengthen you and help you” (Isaiah 41:10). Those words were spoken to a nation in crisis, surrounded by enemies, unsure whether they had a future. They were not spoken into the air. They were fulfilled through human hands, human presence, human courage.

Ronit Elimelech understood this without needing it explained to her. She showed up for her neighbors for years. She showed up on the last day of her life, staying behind when she could have walked out. Her medical gear was found under the rubble beside her.

Now her husband Nissim is raising three traumatized children alone. Two of them are on the autism spectrum. The bills, the therapy appointments, the groceries, the rent: none of it paused for the missile. None of it stopped when Nissim’s world did.

Israel365 Charity is raising funds directly for the Elimelech family, covering housing costs, food, utilities, clothing, and the ongoing therapy their children cannot go without. Every dollar goes to this family.

Ronit spent her life being the answer when someone called for help. Her children are calling now.
