Almost half of Christmas songs have been long known to be composed by, and often sung by, Jews. For example, the well-known song “Let it Snow” was composed a Jew by the name of Sammy Cahn, whose original last name was Cohen.
The National Museum of American Jewish History explores this phenomenon with their new exhibition, titled “Twas the Night Before Hanukkah.” The auditory exhibit highlights both the music of Christmas and Hanukkah, showcasing 18 songs of each holiday and their composers. One of the main features of the exhibit is Irving Berlin’s piano, who composed the iconic song “White Christmas.”
In a new trend, the two faiths have become newly intertwined, but in the opposite direction. In addition to Jewish involvement in Christian music, there recently has been renewed interest by Christians in Jewish music. Often encompassing biblical quotes, Jewish music contains inspiring messages for everyone, making it appealing to both Christians and Jews alike.
