What does the word “blessing” actually mean? An observant Jew says roughly one hundred blessings a day, and each one begins with the same six Hebrew words: Baruch atah Adonai. English Bibles render this as “Blessed are You, God,” as if we are paying God a compliment. The Hebrew tells a different story.
The root of bracha, blessing, is berech, the Hebrew word for knee. The knee is the one hinge in the body whose purpose is to bring you down. To bless is to bring down. We trace that root through Genesis 24, where Abraham’s servant brings his camels to their knees at a well, through Isaac’s blessing of Jacob, through the priestly blessing of Aaron, and through God’s word to Abraham, “be a blessing,” which the sages read as “be a pool.”
