Few nations in history have ever devoted an entire holiday solely to thanking God — and that’s what makes Thanksgiving uniquely American. In this video, we explore why the United States created a national day not for politics, not for victory, not for independence, but purely for gratitude. From a Jewish perspective, this idea of hakarat hatov — recognizing the good — lies at the heart of faith. Unlike ancient pagan gods who demanded sacrifice, Judaism teaches that God has no needs. Everything He gives is an act of loving-kindness, which obligates us to respond with gratitude. And when we look at the story of the Jewish people, there is no nation on earth to whom we owe more gratitude than the United States of America.
For 2,000 years after the destruction of the Second Temple, Jews wandered through exile with no security, no rights, and no stability — until they reached America. For the first time in millennia, Jews were granted full equality and the freedom to thrive. America’s founders were deeply familiar with the Hebrew Bible, and that biblical worldview shaped a society that embraced Jewish life rather than merely tolerating it. From Harry Truman’s immediate recognition of Israel in 1948 to decades of unmatched diplomatic, military, and intelligence support, America has been Israel’s greatest and most loyal friend. This video makes the case that Jews everywhere — especially in Israel — should mark Thanksgiving as a day to thank God for the United States of America.
