What does the Bible really say about heaven? The Hebrew word for heaven, Shamayim, holds a secret most people have never heard, and it changes how we picture heaven, the end of days, and God’s plan for the world.

Most of us imagine heaven as clouds, gates, harps, and endless rest. But Shamayim is built from two Hebrew words: esh (fire) and mayim (water). Fire and water are opposites. Water puts out fire, and fire makes water disappear. Fire rises while water falls. So why would God build heaven out of enemies?

In this Bible teaching from The Israel Bible, we uncover the hidden meaning of Shamayim and what it reveals about justice and mercy, the two ways God relates to our world. Fire is judgment, the refiner’s fire that purifies silver and gold (Malachi 3:2-3). Water is mercy, the love we give before it is earned (Isaiah 55:1). Down here on earth, they are always at war. Every parent, every boss, every person of faith feels that tension. Up in heaven, God makes them live together in peace.

We trace this pattern through the lives of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Abraham was a man of kindness who welcomed strangers and pleaded for Sodom. Isaac was a man of awe and judgment, bound on the altar at Mount Moriah. Each was holy, yet each raised a son who went astray: Ishmael and Esau. Only Jacob brought fire and water together, and only Jacob became Israel, the father of a nation called to bring the pattern of heaven down to earth.

In this video you’ll learn:
– Why the Hebrew word for heaven ends like a pair, just like yadayim (hands) and einayim (eyes)
– What Job 25:2, “He makes peace in His high places,” really means
– Why Ishmael and Esau went wrong, and why all twelve of Jacob’s sons stayed faithful
– Why Micah calls Jacob the man of truth
– Why no human ideology can balance mercy and judgment on its own
– How the Bible’s vision of new heavens and a new earth points to the end of days
– Why heaven is not a prize but a pattern we are meant to copy

Christians and Jews alike will find new depth in Genesis, the patriarchs, biblical prophecy, and the true meaning of heaven in the Bible’s original Hebrew.
