The Talmud (Brachot 30b) explains that since the destruction of the Temple, Jews cannot be fully happy. This is the source of the custom of breaking a glass at a wedding: to lessen the joy a tiny bit. But the Talmud asks, “when can we be fully happy?” It answers with Psalm 126: When the LORD restores the fortunes of Zion—we see it as in a dream, our mouths shall be filled with laughter, our tongues, with songs of joy. Then shall they say among the nations,“The LORD has done great things for them!” When the nations come to praise God for the things he has done for us, then the Jews can be truly happy.”
