A Christian street preacher who was seen proselytizing in downtown Jerusalem on Monday was confronted by renowned Rabbi Tovia Singer.
The preacher was shouting at pedestrians to read the Book of Joel. At that point, Rabbi Singer engaged the preacher and challenged him to explain himself.
The preacher appeared to be despondent and continued shouting phrases such as “if Moses was here today, what would he say unto you?!”
“You say you come close to Hashem with your mouth. But your hearts are far from his declared the lord!”
Rabbi Singer again tried to engage with the man who began recalling Ezekiel.
Rabbi Singer responded by quoting the passage in Ezekiel that says that the innocent shall not die for the sins of the wicked:
A child shall not share the burden of a parent’s guilt, nor shall a parent share the burden of a child’s guilt; the righteousness of the righteous shall be accounted to him alone, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be accounted to him alone. (Ezekiel 18:20)
Rabbi Singer also explained the following verse which gives evil people the opportunity to repent:
Moreover, if the wicked one repents of all the sins that he committed and keeps all My laws and does what is just and right, he shall live; he shall not die. (Ezekiel 18:21)
“We just look at the Jewish bible and as a result, we turn to the God of Israel and no one else will bow to him.”
After suggesting the preacher return to the “original Bible”, the preacher eventually acquiesced and agreed to end his preaching. The two then agreed to stay in touch.
