What does the Bible really mean when it says “go up”?

In this teaching, we open one Hebrew word, aliyah, and follow it through the entire Bible. The root is three letters: ayin, lamed, heh. It means to rise, to climb, to ascend. And once you see it, you will find it everywhere in Scripture.

We look at why Joseph says “let me go up” to bury Jacob in Genesis 50:5, even though Egypt to Canaan is not up on any map. Why Caleb tells Israel “we will surely go up” in Numbers 13:30. Why the Bible always says you go DOWN to mighty Egypt and UP to little Israel. And why the Mount of Olives, the taller hill, is never a place anyone “goes up” to, while the Temple Mount below it always is.

Then we trace the whole family of Hebrew words built from this one root:

Aleh, a leaf pushing up out of the soil (Genesis 8:11, Psalm 1:3)
Korban Olah, the offering that goes up in smoke to heaven (Leviticus, Genesis 22:2)
Aliyah, being called up to the reading of God’s word (Nehemiah 8:4-5)
Aliyah la’Regel, going up to Jerusalem for the three festivals (Deuteronomy 16:16, Exodus 34:24, Psalm 122)

We also compare two kinds of climbing. The king of Babylon says “I will ascend” five times in his heart in Isaiah 14:13-14, and God brings him down to the pit. Jacob sees a ladder in Genesis 28:12 with angels going up and down, never stopping, never arriving. One man climbs to crown himself. One man climbs toward God. A

nd here is the part most Christians have never been told. The prophets promise a day when the nations of the world make aliyah. Isaiah 2:3 says the peoples will declare, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord.” Zechariah 14:16 promises that everyone left of all the nations shall go up year after year to worship the King.
