After Israel’s devastating campaign against Hezbollah in 2024 and the death of Hassan Nasrallah, a new Lebanese leadership emerged in early 2025 promising reform, recovery, and—most importantly—the disarmament of Hezbollah. Backed by Western nations, Saudi Arabia, and international pressure, Beirut is trying to reclaim sovereignty after decades of Hezbollah dominance. But this bold move has ignited a storm: the Lebanese army is deeply divided, senior officers are resisting, and Hezbollah itself is openly threatening civil war if disarmament goes ahead.
With Israel refusing to withdraw from its southern defensive positions until Hezbollah is dismantled, Lebanon is now caught in a dangerous standoff. Hezbollah still controls political blocs, schools, charities, and even banks, making it far more than just a militia. If the government pushes forward, Lebanon risks fracturing from within. If it doesn’t, the nation remains hostage to Hezbollah’s power. Either way, Lebanon may be heading straight into another civil war—one that could shake the entire Middle East.
