Ezra Cohen’s grandfather left Jerusalem for Colombia because the city had nothing to offer him. His father fought in the War of Independence, held the Old City with 35 men against 2,000 Jordanian soldiers, spent nine months as a prisoner of war, and then moved to Panama looking for a country with no war and no winter. Seventy-four years later, Ezra Cohen arrived in Jerusalem as Panama’s ambassador, rented a house down the street from the one his grandfather built, and walked into the same synagogue where his grandfather’s name still hangs on the donor wall.
