What Christians get right about Zionism (and what they’re still missing)

In March 2024, the doors of two Orthodox synagogues in Toronto were shot up on a Friday night. Two years later, the rabbi of the largest Orthodox congregation in Canada is packing his bags for Jerusalem.

In this episode of The Universal Zionist, Rabbi Korobkin of the BAYT in Toronto explains what happened to Canadian Jewry after October 7th, why he now writes two or three aliyah letters every week when he used to write one a month, and why he says there is not a single Jew in Canada today who is not quietly planning an exit strategy.

But this conversation goes far beyond the headlines. Rabbi Korobkin is the translator of the Kuzari, the great medieval work of Rabbi Yehuda HaLevi, and he unpacks the debate at the heart of biblical Zionism: is the Land of Israel holy because God designated it, or is there something inherently holy in the land itself? That question, written nine hundred years ago, shapes how we read the promises of Scripture today.

For Christian viewers, the second half of this conversation may be the most important. Rabbi Korobkin serves on the board of the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews and has spent years building relationships with pastors and parishes across Ontario. He argues that the relationship between Christians and Jews has been too much of a one-way street, and that the time has come for the Jewish people to give something back. Not money, but Torah. Not politics, but spiritual partnership.

He also addresses what many believers sense but struggle to articulate: that a secular state creates a vacuum where hatred settles in, and that a society which pushes God out of public life has no defense against the darkness that follows. And he shares his conviction that redemption is unfolding as an evolutionary process rather than a sudden miracle, that COVID and October 7th were not coincidences, and that every believer, Jewish and Christian alike, has a role to play in the story God is writing right now.
