In 38 seconds on the evening of June 24, Venezuela experienced what seismologists are calling a rare “earthquake doublet” — two massive quakes striking nearly simultaneously, the strongest to hit the country in over a century. Within 24 hours, Japan’s northeastern coast was rocking from a 7.2 magnitude tremor. The earth, it seems, is not at rest. And for students of biblical prophecy, the timing and frequency of these events demand attention.
Venezuela: The Century’s Worst
At least 235 people have been killed and 4,300 injured in Venezuela following back-to-back earthquakes that devastated communities in Caracas and the country’s main Caribbean seaport, La Guaira, according to Venezuelan Health Minister Carlos Alvarado.
The strongest event was a magnitude 7.5 earthquake about 28 km southeast of Yumare, Venezuela, at a depth of about 10 km, followed just 39 seconds later by a magnitude 7.2 earthquake. USGS issued a red PAGER alert for both events, meaning high casualties and extensive damage were considered probable.
The death toll is expected to climb significantly. The U.S. Geological Survey, using predictive modeling, estimates a 40% chance of between 10,000 and 100,000 casualties, and a 14% chance of exceeding that range. A website created to track missing persons listed more than 46,000 people as missing.

The coastal state of La Guaira was among the hardest-hit areas. Venezuelan Interim President Delcy Rodríguez described the area as a “disaster zone,” announcing the closure of Caracas’s international airport and the suspension of train services. In the port town of Morón, three children were among at least eight killed. “Dozens of buildings have collapsed, and we are currently carrying out very intense rescue efforts to save as many lives as God allows us to save,” Rodríguez said.
Rescue specialists from the U.S., Mexico, Spain, and Qatar are traveling to the disaster zone, while the United Nations is deploying aid. A $200 million reconstruction fund for hospitals, houses, and other collapsed infrastructure has been established.
President Trump pledged a rapid U.S. response, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio announcing the deployment of search and rescue teams, medical resources, and humanitarian assistance. “We will have a whole-of-government response,” Rubio said.
The M7.5 mainshock was the strongest earthquake to strike Venezuela in more than a century — exceeding the M6.6 Caracas earthquake of 1967 that killed roughly 240 people and marking the country’s largest event since the M7.7 earthquake of 1900.
Japan and Beyond
Venezuela was not alone. On Thursday morning, June 25, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck off the coast of Japan’s Iwate Prefecture at a depth of 44 km. Strong shaking was recorded in neighboring Aomori Prefecture. Nine people suffered minor injuries in Aomori, while two women in Iwate sustained serious injuries after falls. Rail services on the Tohoku Shinkansen were suspended for several hours, and 114 schools in the two prefectures were temporarily closed. The Japan Meteorological Agency warned residents to remain alert for aftershocks over the coming week.
The Japanese quake follows a series of strong earthquakes that have struck northeastern Japan since late 2025, including several events exceeding magnitude 7.0 in the Sanriku offshore region.
Meanwhile, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck Northern California on Wednesday morning — the region’s strongest since 1940 — near the agricultural town of Willits, about 140 miles northeast of San Francisco. Power outages affected more than 6,000 residents across six towns near the epicenter.
What the Prophets Said
A global wave of earthquakes in a single 48-hour window raises a question that every Bible-believing reader is asking: is this a sign?
The answer from the Hebrew prophets is unambiguous. The Prophet Ezekiel described earthquakes as a defining feature of the end-of-days scenario known as the War of Gog u’Magog:
“Mountains shall be overthrown, cliffs shall topple, and every wall shall crumble to the ground.” (Ezekiel 38:20)
The Prophet Jeremiah placed earthquakes directly in the context of divine judgment:
“But Hashem God is the true God, He is the living God, and the everlasting King; at His wrath the earth trembleth, and the nations are not able to abide His indignation.” (Jeremiah 10:10)
Rabbi Yekutiel Fish, author of the Hebrew Bible blog Sod HaChashmal, told Israel365 News that forces of nature — earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes — are manifestations of God’s judgment, expressed through the divine name Elohim. He pointed to Psalms 46:3-4 as describing precisely this kind of end-of-days upheaval: “Therefore we are not afraid though the earth reels, though mountains topple into the sea. Its waters rage and foam; in its swell mountains quake.”
“The entire world will be judged before the Moshiach (Messiah),” Rabbi Fish said. “Nature will change, be less normal, because God will be guiding it in a more direct manner. This will be especially true during the War of Gog and Magog — God will play a major role via nature, through natural disasters.”
Rabbi Fish cited Rabbi David Altschuler, the 18th-century Galician Bible commentator known as the Metsudat David, who taught that in the War of Gog and Magog, half the casualties will fall in battle between the nations — and the other half will be caused by natural disasters, prominent among them unprecedented earthquakes.
The Sages also connect earthquake activity to prophetic awakening. Dr. Shmuel Marco, Head of the School of Environment and Earth Sciences at Tel Aviv University, documented that major earthquakes in the Jordan Valley — in 31 BCE, 363 CE, 749 CE, and 1033 CE — preceded periods of intense prophetic activity. “Almost a whole millennium has passed since the last strong earthquake,” Marco wrote. “A major quake should be expected any time.”
The Mishnah in Tractate Brachot (54A) prescribes a specific blessing upon witnessing an earthquake: “Blessed be He whose strength and power fill the world.” It is not a blessing of mourning. It is a declaration of divine sovereignty.
The earth shook on June 24. It shook again on June 25. The prophets told us this was coming. The question now is whether we are paying attention.
