Israel could defend Ukraine against Russia according to new proposal

Ukraine proposed adopting the status of a neutral nation in return for security guarantees during peace talks with Russia in Turkey,  according to Reuters. The neutral status would compel Kyiv against joining military alliances or host military bases.

The proposals are the most comprehensive that Ukraine has publicized yet. The proposal envisions security guarantees in accordance with the NATO military alliance’s Article 5 – a unified defense clause. Israel was listed among the countries that would be a security guarantor for Ukraine. Other countries listed included Poland, Turkey, and Canada.

The proposal would also involve a 15-year consultation period on Crimea’s status. The negotiators said it may be enforced only in the event of a total ceasefire to reporters in Istanbul.

Guaranteeing Ukraine’s security against another potential invasion from Russia could harm Israel’s relations with the Kremlin. Jerusalem has remained relatively neutral throughout the conflict as Russian forces are stationed close to Israel’s northern border in Syria. The IDF coordinates with Moscow during its air raid on Syria when targeting Iranian assets in the region.

In February, Israel365 News reported that Russia challenged Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan after foreign minister Yair Lapid hinted that Israel would sanction Moscow.
