MK Meir Porush (UTJ) disrupted a Knesset Consitution and Law Committee committee on Sunday, blasting the shofar in protest against Reform Rabbi MK Gilad Kariv for what he considers to be violating the holiness of the Western Wall.
MKs in the committee appeared shocked by his actions as Kariv thanked Porush sarcastically.
Kariv, an ordained Reform rabbi and director of the Reform movement in Israel, stood with a Torah scroll with the Women of the Wall. This feminist organization gathers for prayer services at the Western Wall on the first day of each month in the Hebrew calendar. Kariv made a video imploring Prime Minister Naftali Bennett to institute the delayed Western Wall compromise, which allows for a pluralistic prayer space at the site.
MK Betzalel Smotrich blasted Kariv calling his actions “provocative.
The act resulted in thousands of Haredi Jews converging upon the Western Wall on Friday morning, scuffling with police as they tried to stop the monthly feminist prayer service from taking place.
Porush, who performed a similar protest in October, entered the room where a meeting of the Knesset’s Consitution and Law Committee was taking place, which Kariv heads, and began reciting Psalms in loudly. As Porush continued, Kariv had the committee take a 15-minute recess. Porush said: “You disrupted us; we’ll disrupt you.” After saying Psalms, Porush blew the shofar before leaving the room.
