Rumors that Prince Harry’s fiancee, Meghan Markle, was Jewish turned out to be false, but as the wedding takes shape, some Jewish connections are turning up.
The couple announced their engagement last month, saying that they will wed in St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, Kensington Palace. The royal family recently announced that 33-year-old Prince Harry, fifth in line to the throne, and 36-year-old Markle will wed on the May 19th, which, coincidentally will be the eve of Shavuot, the Jewish Feast of the Weeks which also commemorates God giving the Torah to the Jews at Mount Sinai.
The royal family has requested preliminary sketches for the wedding dress from Inbar Dror, a popular bridal fashion designer from Ashdod, Israel.
Dror, a graduate of The Shenkar Fashion Art Academy in Tel Aviv, has already designed wedding dresses for high-profile weddings, such as the superstar entertainer Beyonce.
The couple was introduced by Jewish American-based fashion designer Misha Nonoo, a friend of Markle’s.
Though Markle is not Jewish and she will marry Harry in the Church of England, she is familiar with Jewish weddings. Markle’s first husband, Trevor Engelson, was Jewish and they married in Jamiaca in 2011 in a Jewish-style wedding. The couple divorced in 2013.
