An IDF officer sustained serious injuries as a result of multiple terrorist pipe bomb explosions on Tuesday night at the entrance to the Palestinian town of Hizma, north of Jerusalem, the IDF Spokesperson Unit said.

An army force was examining a suspicious item when it exploded, severely wounding the officer. Investigators have concluded that four separate pipe bombs exploded, the IDF said. Five more pipe bombs were found at the scene and were handled by a bomb squad.

The officer was taken was to Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem. He is being treated in the trauma unit for severe wounds, Hadassah spokesperson Hadar Elboim said.

IDF forces are scouring the area for suspects.

This is the second terror attack of the day. Earlier on Tuesday, two elderly Israeli women were stabbed by masked terrorists on the promenade of the Armon Hanatziv neighborhood, overlooking Jerusalem’s Old City. The suspects reportedly fled into the nearby predominantly Arab neighborhood of Jabel Mukaber.

The latest attack comes as Israel marks Yom Hazikaron, its national Memorial Day for Fallen Soldiers and Victims of Terrorism, which began Tuesday night. According to official statistics, 68 Israelis have been killed by terror attacks or fallen in the line of duty since last Memorial Day.
