George Weisz (1923-2016)

WEISZ, GEORGE, 92, of Beachwood, Ohio, passed away early Thursday morning, February 18th, peacefully at his home.

Survived by his wife, Pepi (Josephine) Weisz; daughter, Linda (Jeffrey) Bookman; son, Michael (Chanita) Weisz; grandchildren Rorie (Michael) Weisberg, Naphtali (Abby) Weisz, Joshua (Goldy) Bookman, Leah (Uriel) Sturm, Akiva (Aliza) Bookman, Ariella (Jonathan) Eltes, Reva (Nati) Weider and Mina (Steven) Steiglitz; and many great-grandchildren.

Born on September 10, 1923 in Kapuvar, Hungary, George Weisz was on the first transport of Hungarian Jews to the Auschwitz Concentration Camp and was liberated from the Ebensee Concentration Camp on May 6, 1945.

George moved to Chicago in 1950 where he met and married his wife of 63 years, Pepi (nee Moskowitz). He opened a Kosher butcher shop in Chicago before moving to Cleveland in 1964, where he built a nursing home which was the beginning of a long and successful career in both healthcare and real estate throughout Ohio for over half a century.

Weisz was one of the builders of the Green Road Synagogue and an active member who attended daily prayer services until just a few weeks ago. Recipient of the Hebrew Academy of Cleveland Living Memorial Award in 2015, George was deeply committed to Jewish education.

Weisz leaves behind a legacy of kindness, generosity and honor and will be missed by his many employees, friends and family. Donations may be made to the Hebrew Academy of Cleveland and the Green Road Synagogue.

Funeral services will be conducted by Rabbis Blau and Granatstein of the Green Road Synagogue at the Berkowowitz Kumin funeral home at 3:00 pm.
