A report by Israel’s Channel 2 news station this week has revealed that the German government indirectly funds a church group known for its anti-Israel stance.

Germany provides millions of dollars to the Bread of the World organization, a major contributor to the World Council of Churches (WCC). All told, the Channel 2 report said, Germany’s indirect contribution to the group totalled 10 million euro over two years.

The primary concern of Bread of the World is to combat hunger worldwide. The WCC is an ecumenical umbrella group of hundreds of churches around the world, claiming to represent 500 million Christians. It has also come out strongly against Israel’s policies towards the Palestinians and supports the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement against the Jewish state.

The WCC runs several programs for Palestinians in Judea and Samaria, including the Ecumenical Accompaniment Program in Palestine and Israel and the Palestine Israel Ecumenical Forum.

The Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs had labelled the WCC “hostile” to Israel, while the Anti-Defamation League has accused it of biased, one-sided attitudes towards Israel.

The German government responded to the report in a statement, saying: “The German government opposes calls for boycotting Israel and does not directly or indirectly fund the World Council of Churches. The German government supports projects to eliminate poverty as well as non-governmental organizations in Israel and the Palestinian Authority.”
