Israel is bracing for a major cold front and storm set to hit this week, with the first snowfall already descending on the slopes of Mount Hermon on Saturday.

Saturday saw substantial amounts of rain falling throughout the country. However, the brunt of the storm is expected later this week.

The Israel Meteorological Service has issued warnings for heavy winds and rain in the northern and central part of the country. A strong likelihood of isolated sandstorms and flash flooding are expected throughout the south.

Meteorologists say there is a chance of snowfall in Safed and Jerusalem. The Jerusalem municipality and security agencies are already taking measures to prepare for the stormy weather.

Jerusalemites have been asked to prepare for the storm and follow guidelines in the event of snow. Temperatures in Jerusalem are expected to reach freezing temperatures.

The municipality recommends residents check that their heating systems are operational and have flashlights handy. Last year’s snowstorm knocked out power for millions of residents in the Jerusalem, Judea and Binyamin region for days, leaving them without heat.

The US Embassy has issued a travel advisory for its citizens traveling to and already in the country. The Embassy recommended that all citizens pack “warm winter clothing, boots, water, shovel and emergency food supplies.” It also asked that travelers “consider deferring any non-essential travel.”

Citing the complications from last year’s snowstorm debacle, the Embassy stated, “Similar weather conditions at this same time of year in 2014 resulted in the closure of major roadways, stranded and isolated motorists, and difficult/perilous travel conditions.”
