Canadian-born Israeli Gill Rosenberg made history last month for being the first foreign female to join the Kurdish army in fighting against the Islamic State. Now the young woman, who in Israel goes by her Hebrew name, Gila, may have been captured by IS.

Several Islamist websites, which the Jerusalem Post noted were considered “close” to the al-Qaeda offshoot, reported that she is in IS hands. According to Ynetnews, Rosenberg was taken while fighting with the Kurdish Peshmerga forces in Kobani, Syria. Kurdish sources, however, believe the reports are IS propaganda.

The Canadian government is aware of the claims and “is pursuing all appropriate channels” to verify them, a Canadian foreign ministry spokesperson told CBC News Sunday. Israel’s security agency, the Shin Bet, told The Jerusalem Post, “there are no further details at this stage.”

Rosenberg commented on a photo on her own Facebook page November 9, “My last day in Israel – seems like way more than a week ago. YPG uniform pics coming soon! Once the tailor finishes my customized uniform.” YPG is the Kurdish women’s militia she joined. Then last week, Jerusalem Post reported, she posted that she would be offline for a while, as she was entering a region without Internet.

“They (the Kurds) are our brothers. They are good people. They love life, a lot like us, really,” Rosenberg said in an Israel Radio telephone interview aired November 10, explaining why she opted to sign up.

It should be noted that Rosenberg broke Israeli law when she flew from Israel to Iraq, an enemy country. This is not her first brush with the law, either. As reported by several sources when her story first went public last month, in 2009 she was arrested for her role in bilking hundreds of thousands of dollars out of unwitting American pensioners in a fake lottery scheme, and subsequently served four years in jail.

Should the reports turn out to be correct, Rosenberg’s situation in captivity will be complicated by both her gender and her dual nationality. She would be the first Western female and the second dual-nationality Israeli to fall into IS hands, The Jerusalem Post pointed out. Steven Sotloff, an American journalist with Israeli citizenship, was beheaded by IS in September. IS has also taken thousands of Yazidi females captive, many of whom have been forced to convert or sold into sexual slavery.
