A 27-year-old man attacked passengers on a train as it was pulling into the station in Salez, Switzerland on Saturday afternoon, injuring seven, including a six-year-old child. Some of the injured are reported to be in serious condition.

Police said two men aged 17 and 50 and three women aged 17, 34 and 43 were burned by the fire or suffered knife injuries.

The man, described as a Swiss citizen, began attacking the passengers with a knife before pouring a flammable liquid around the carriage and setting it on fire. several dozen passengers were on the train at the time of the attack.

The attack occurred around 14:20 (12:20 GMT) as the train was approaching Salez station, between the towns of Buchs and Sennwald, near the Lichtenstein border.

Police are still speculating about the motive and no more information has been given as to the identity of the attacker, who was injured and taken to hospital for treatment.

This attack is disturbingly similar to an attack last month in  Würzburg, Germany, in which a 17-year-old refugee armed with a knife and an ax injured four people seriously. Police labelled that incident a terror attack with an Islamist religious motive.
