Missiles lit up the skies over the Gulf on Saturday night as Iran struck not only Israel but six Arab states, turning cities long considered insulated from regional war into active fronts. One person was killed in Abu Dhabi when a missile hit a residential area, shattering the sense of security in capitals that host key American military installations.
Several of the targeted countries host American bases used in the joint US-Israeli operation against Iran earlier that day. After Israel and the United States launched coordinated waves of strikes across Iran, targeting senior regime figures including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian, Tehran broadened its response to what it views as the regional infrastructure supporting Washington’s military presence.
US President Donald Trump suggested that the ultimate objective of the strikes could be regime change. An Israeli official said senior military commanders were also targeted. The results of those strikes were not immediately clear.
Within hours, Iran launched multiple waves of missiles at Israel and at Gulf states hosting US forces.
In the United Arab Emirates, the Defense Ministry said “a worker of Asian nationality” was killed when a missile struck a residential area in Abu Dhabi. Falling shrapnel damaged homes. Abu Dhabi said it “reserves its full right to respond” and called the attack “a dangerous escalation.” In Dubai, residents reported seeing missiles streak past the skyline near the Burj Khalifa. “It was a rumble and then a bang,” one resident told AFP.

In Jordan, a missile fell on a home in Amman, according to state media. The armed forces said two ballistic missiles were intercepted by air defense systems. Footage circulating in Arabic media showed flames and smoke rising from damaged structures.

Bahrain reported that a center servicing the US Fifth Fleet headquarters was hit in a missile attack. “The Fifth Fleet’s service centre was subjected to a missile attack. We will provide you with details later,” the National Communication Centre said. A 15-year-old student in the area described the blasts as unforgettable.

In Qatar, explosions were heard over Doha and near the Al-Udeid base, the largest US military facility in the region. The defense ministry said it intercepted incoming missiles before they entered Qatari airspace. Airspace was temporarily closed. An American resident described glass shaking in her car as blasts sounded overhead.

Saudi Arabia confirmed that Riyadh was targeted in a missile strike that it said was successfully intercepted. The foreign ministry condemned what it called “brutal Iranian aggression” and said the kingdom would take all necessary measures to defend its territory. Saudi officials noted that they had previously communicated that their airspace would not be used for attacks on Iran.

Kuwait said its air defense systems engaged incoming missiles detected in its airspace, according to a statement from the Chief of Staff.
Israel was also targeted in the Iranian retaliation, with multiple waves of missiles fired toward Israeli territory.
The expansion of the conflict underscores a hard reality of Middle Eastern geopolitics. Hosting American forces carries consequences when Washington enters open confrontation with Tehran. Iran did not limit its response to Israel. It targeted the regional network it sees as enabling American power projection.
Saturday night’s strikes showed that a war once measured in shadow operations and proxy forces can spill rapidly across borders, especially when American bases are involved. Gulf capitals built on trade, tourism, and expatriate labor found themselves under missile fire because of strategic alliances. Iran made clear that it views those alliances as legitimate targets. The region now stands in open escalation, and the line between battlefield and bystander has been erased.
