Passengers reported initial delays of 25 minutes before airline staff announced a more serious problem with luggage. The aircraft eventually departed around 3:45 p.m., leaving suitcases behind for individual security screening.
One passenger described the confusion on board. “It was a regular El Al flight on a Monday afternoon, full of Israelis who had gone to the All-Star and were heading home. We checked our suitcases as usual and were supposed to take off at 2:00 p.m. At first they said there would be a 25-minute delay, then they said there was a bigger delay because of an issue with luggage. Only around a quarter to four did we take off.”
El Al officials later explained that the 140 suitcases had been removed after the stickers were discovered. Each bag required individual inspection to rule out explosives. Due to the time-sensitive nature of airline operations, the plane departed without the luggage. Passengers were informed that their bags would follow on the next direct flight to Israel.
