An El Al flight from Los Angeles to Tel Aviv was delayed nearly two hours this week after 140 passengers’ suitcases were removed from the aircraft over “Free Palestine” stickers attached to the luggage. The stickers prompted an immediate security review, causing the afternoon flight to take off without the affected bags.
The flight, scheduled for 2:00 p.m., was largely filled with Israelis returning from NBA All-Star weekend events to see Deni Avdija. Passengers reported initial delays of 25 minutes before airline staff announced a more serious problem with luggage. The aircraft eventually departed around 3:45 p.m., leaving suitcases behind for individual security screening.
One passenger described the confusion on board. “It was a regular El Al flight on a Monday afternoon, full of Israelis who had gone to the All-Star and were heading home. We checked our suitcases as usual and were supposed to take off at 2:00 p.m. At first they said there would be a 25-minute delay, then they said there was a bigger delay because of an issue with luggage. Only around a quarter to four did we take off.”
El Al officials later explained that the 140 suitcases had been removed after the stickers were discovered. Each bag required individual inspection to rule out explosives. Due to the time-sensitive nature of airline operations, the plane departed without the luggage. Passengers were informed that their bags would follow on the next direct flight to Israel.
This incident highlights the ongoing security challenges faced by Israeli airlines in the face of organized attempts to disrupt travel. The Sages teach, “For the LORD will not forsake his people; he will not abandon his inheritance” (Psalm 94:14). The principle reflects Israel’s vigilance in safeguarding its citizens against external threats, even in routine civil operations such as air travel.
The “Free Palestine” stickers, a symbol of anti-Israel activism, created an unnecessary security crisis that delayed hundreds of travelers. Such actions are a reminder that ideological campaigns, even through seemingly minor gestures, can have real-world consequences. Israeli authorities and airline staff responded decisively, ensuring the flight departed safely and passengers’ property would reach them without compromise.
In an era where symbolic gestures are often weaponized against the State of Israel, maintaining vigilance is not optional. The flight’s delay underscores the importance of securing both citizens and the nation’s operations against those who seek to disrupt and delegitimize Israel.
