Israeli police commissioner Yaacok Shabtai has announced a dramatic reduction in the duration of the police academy following a record number of police resignations, reports Ynet.Â
Horrible work conditions and low salaries have compelled an unprecedented wave of resignations from Israel’s law enforcers.
The goal of the reduced training is to bring as many police officers on duty as quickly as possible.
The decision to reduce the training’s duration came after repeated complaints from police commissioners across Israel, who informed the commissioner of the severe lack of personnel and that the treasury isn’t providing a solution. In some stations, tens of officers, a phenomenon that could shut down an entire station.
Due to the cutback, roughly 90% of the exercises simulating various arrest scenarios that cadets will likely encounter in the field will be cut from the program. Some scenarios that will be cut from the program include domestic violence, robberies, and other assaults. Instead, they will learn about them via virtual learning.
The police academy training staff expressed disappointment at the decision saying there is no substitute for the real-life simulations taught in the academy. But they also understand that the lack of beat cops demands a quick solution.
