An American family of tourists showed up at Ben Gurion International Airport on Thursday, set to leave Israel. When passing through the security check, they showed the security inspector an unexploded shell they had found while hiking in the Golan which they had packed in order to take home as a souvenir.

People in the airport terminal scrambled for safety when the unexploded shell was discovered. One man was lightly injured while trying to flee over a baggage carousel. The family was allowed to board their flight after an interrogation by security staff.

The Golan Heights was captured by Israel in the 1967 Six-Day War and saw fierce fighting in 1973 between the IDF and the Syrian army. It is believed that the shell was a remnant of one of those conflicts. The Golan still has extensive minefields.
