Canada Holocaust Memorial Plaque Removed For Not Mentioning Jews

Last Week, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau dedicated Canada‘s first Holocaust Memorial and only one thing was lacking: any mention of the Jewish people.

The structure itself, located in Ottowa, was designed by Daniel Libeskind, the Polish-American architect, to recognize the Jewish suffering in the Holocaust. The project took ten years to materialize. Composed of large concrete walls shaped like a large six-pointed Jewish Star, it clearly reflects that the Jews were the focus of the Nazi Final Solution, but the inaugural plaque did not.

The opposition Conservative party was quick to point out the omission.

“How could the prime minister permit such a glaring omission of reference to anti-Semitism and the fact that the millions of men, women, and children who were murdered were overwhelmingly Jewish?” said MP David Sweet. “If we are going to stamp out hatred toward Jews, it is important to get history right,”

The omission was egregious enough to merit immediate action and the plaque was removed.

“The National Holocaust monument commemorates the six million Jews as well as the five million other victims that were murdered during the Holocaust,” said Mélanie Joly, adding, “The plaque has been removed and we will replace it with language that reflects the horrors experienced by the Jewish people.”

Despite the apology, the plaque reflects a disturbing habit by the Canadian leader.  In 2016, Prime Minister Trudeau was criticised for failing to mention Jewish people specifically in his statement marking International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Instead, he described the day as one to “pay tribute to the memory of the millions of victims murdered during the Holocaust”.
