The door of the metro car was blown off by the force of the explosion in St. Petersburg

At least ten people were killed and fifty injured when two major explosions tore apart a metro car in St. Petersburg on Monday afternoon.

Authorities believe the explosions were caused by bombs filled with shrapnel to inflict maximum damage.

Following the incident, which a Russian official said shows “every sign of a terrorist attack”, the subway station, a central stop on the line, was quickly evacuated and the city’s transit system shut down.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, who was in St. Petersburg at the time of the explosion, said that it was too early to determine a cause, but that investigators will look at “all possible causes, terrorism as well as common crime.”

Israel’s consul general in St. Petersburg has reached out to Russian authorities to determine if any Israelis were injured in the explosion.
