U.S. officials fear that the total collapse of peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians may be soon approaching, according to a report by Israel Radio. Led by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, the United States is attempting to find ways to extend peace talks beyond its April deadline.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has threatened to block the release of Palestinian prisoners, including terrorists, unless Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas agrees to extend talks. Abbas threatened that should the prisoner’s not be released without any future promises, he would walk away completely from the negotiating table.

Abbas, who is famous for his “three no’s” regarding central issues surrounding the peace talks, recently told U.S. President Barack Obama that the failure of peace talks rests solely on Israel.

Abbas rejected the framework document for peace, citing that the Palestinians would never recognize Israel as a Jewish state, would continue fighting for Palestinian “right of return,” and refused to commit to an “end of conflict” which would not allow the Palestinians to make future demand on Israel.

According to the report, negotiations are heading towards a point of “explosion” ever since Abbas formally refused Kerry’s peace framework to extend talks.

In order to preserve the progress made thus far, the Obama administration is scrambling to appease both sides and keep them talking. The U.S. is considering “creative” ways to entice both sides to extend peace talks.

According to anonymous sources, Israel Radio said that the U.S. is considering releasing Jonathan Pollard, who has been imprisoned for three decades in the U.S. on charges of spying for Israel. The idea to release Pollard was proposed initially by Netanyahu is his last visit to Washington.

As a “concession” for the Palestinians, Israel agreed to release approximately 100 terrorists from prison in four installments. Obama asked Abbas to delay the release date of the prisoners in order to conduct further talks, but the PA president has adamantly refused.
