Gush Etzion residents were recently surprised to be redirected from google.co.il to google.ps, the Palestinian site of the popular search engine.
“It’s unfortunate that the Google company, which is a business entity and not a political body, has decided that the residents of Judea and Samaria belong to the Palestinian Authority,” wrote Director-General of the Legal Forum for the Land of Israel Nahi Eyal in a letter to Google. “We are calling on you to remove this kind of proclamation.”
Google, for its part, claims this was neither intentional nor a political statement; the search engine merely identifies the geographic context of its users and offers suggestions. According to Google Israel spokesperson Nathan Tyler, the search engine is simply designed to provide the “best experience” for its users.
