The IDF confirmed that a rocket launched from Gaza late Friday landed inside Israel.

The rocket, which exploded in the Eshkol Regional Council in southern Israel, was detected by military radars. No sirens sounded along the Gaza belt communities.

This is the second incident of rocket fire occurring inside Israel since Israel and Hamas reached a ceasefire on August 26 after a 50-day war. In mid-September, a rocket fired from Gaza landed inside Israel near the southern border.

While the ceasefire is still in effect, Hamas has been test-firing new rockets inside Gaza. The testing has triggered code red sirens to sound across southern Israel several times.

In response to the rocket fire, Israel closed the Erez and Kerem Shalom border crossings into Israel on Sunday. Hamas deputy leader Mussa Abu Marzouk said that the closings are a violation of the ceasefire.

Abu Marzouk said the move was “childish and irresponsible” and that the rocket fire was an illegitimate excuse to close the border, Israel Radio reported.

The Hamas leader said that Israel is imposing collective punishment on the Gaza Strip and would delay rehabilitation efforts.

This is the first time that Israel has closed both border crossings since the end of Operation Protective Edge.

Along the Egypt-Gaza border, the Rafah Border crossing has remained closed since last week. Egyptian officials evacuated residents living along the border with Gaza as part of a plan to create a security buffer zone between the two territories.

Egypt accused Hamas of aiding radical Islamist terrorists operating in the Sinai, an allegation denied by the Gaza-based terror group.
